Innovative Approaches to Assessing the Radioecological Situation of Aragats Massif: Radionuclide Background and Baseline, Migration and Risk

Project manager from CENS: Nona Movsisyan

Funded by։ RA MESCS Higher Education and Science Committee, "Support Program for Young Postgraduate and PhD Students-2020"

The goal of the project is the implementation of monitoring in the area of Aragats massif, with an innovative approach to the assessment of the radioecological situation, in particular, the evaluation of the background and baseline activity of radionuclides, the identification of migration and the assessment of the risk caused by radionuclides. For this purpose, sampling of various components of the environment (soils from surface and deep layers, mosses, river bottom sediments and alluvial soils) was carried out in the area of Aragats massif and gamma spectrometric analysis were performed.

Within the frames of the project:

  • Baseline activities of natural radionuclides and artificial radionuclides were evaluated,
  • The features of the vertical migration of radionuclides in the soil were revealed,
  • An altitude-based distribution model of artificial Cs-137 was developed,
  • The migration of natural and artificial radionuclides in bottom sediments of rivers and alluvial soils was studied,
  • The ecological risk caused by radionuclides for the area of Aragats massif was assessed
