Healthy Soil as the Foundation of Sustainable Agriculture: A New Scientific Project at CENS

26.01.2026

#CENS is starting the year with the launch of important scientific research projects. The first working discussion has already been held with the participation of an interdisciplinary team formed by representatives of three departments.

This project, which won the “Demand Driven” competition and is funded by the Higher Education and Science Committee, will enable the development of a comprehensive and practical approach to monitoring soil organic carbon (SOC) and humus, particularly in agricultural and degraded areas. The aim of the project is to develop, adapt, and apply reliable and accessible methodologies for determining humus and SOC content in soils by combining traditional laboratory methods with remote sensing technologies.

Healthy soil is a fundamental pillar of sustainable agriculture and climate resilience. Humus and organic carbon play a key role in enhancing productivity, carbon sequestration, and ecosystem conservation.

Scientific knowledge should first and foremost be adopted and applied by the state, for the benefit of society
